ABOUT
McCoy Mrubata, one of the most celebrated and influential voices in South African jazz. A master saxophonist, flautist, composer and bandleader, McCoy has spent more than four decades shaping the sound of South African music, taking his unmistakably soulful, energetic style from the streets of Langa to stages around the world.
Born and raised in Cape Town’s historic Langa township, McCoy’s musical language was shaped by the sounds around him — African rhythms, traditional chants, church music and the vibrant brass bands of the township. His extraordinary career has seen him perform and collaborate with some of the greatest names in music, including Hugh Masekela, Lucky Dube, Jonathan Butler, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim and Wynton Marsalis, as well as many of South Africa's most revered jazz musicians.
A multi-award-winning artist, McCoy has released an extraordinary body of work spanning decades, with albums including Face the Music, Icamagu Livumile and the Brasskap Sessions series. His accolades include multiple South African Music Awards, the 2018 Kennedy Center Gold Award and a 2022 SAMA Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising his immense contribution to South African music and the arts.
His performances are rooted in African musical traditions but never confined by them — expect infectious rhythms, rich melodies, powerful improvisation and the unmistakable warmth of a musician who has spent a lifetime perfecting his craft. McCoy continues to create and perform with the same curiosity and energy that have defined his remarkable career, most recently releasing Children on the Frontline in 2026.
Join us at Hugh’s for an intimate evening with a true South African jazz legend. This is an opportunity to experience McCoy Mrubata up close, in a room designed specifically for listening, connection and exceptional live music.
