ABOUT
Sounds of a Black Girl — Hugh’s Johannesburg
On 10 September, Gabi Motuba brings Sounds of a Black Girl to Hugh’s Jazz Club in Johannesburg in an intimate and virtuosic quartet setting.
Featuring Gabi Motuba on vocals, alongside piano, double bass and drums, this performance offers a deeper encounter with the sonic world of her acclaimed 2026 album where jazz meets classical traditions and African, Eastern and Western vocal practices.
Expect an expansive exploration of the voice as instrument, storyteller and force. Through intricate vocal textures, improvisation, virtuosity and an ever-shifting relationship between composition and spontaneous expression, Motuba continues to ask: what can the voice become?
A 2026 Standard Bank Young Artist Award recipient, Motuba is approaching one of the most significant moments of her artistic year: her major presentation at the 2026 Joy of Jazz on the Diphala Stage.
This performance at Hugh’s is the last stop before that moment, an opportunity to witness the music, ideas and formations being refined in real time before they reach the festival stage.
Come and be a witness to The Voice.
