For the centenary of Nosferatu director F.W. Murnau's stunning 1926 adaptation of Goethe's FAUST, The MAKABRA ENSEMBLE will perform a new soundtrack to this silent classic, live to the screen, on Halloween night!

The demon Mephisto bets an Archangel that he can corrupt a righteous man's soul and destroy within him that which is divine. If he succeeds, the Devil will win dominion over earth.

This timeless tale got an incredible translation to the screen by Murnau, still visually stunning a hundred years after its original release in 1926.

The Makabra Ensemble has only performed a score for FAUST once in 2012, but this special performance re-visiting will feature special guest musicians Sara Eksteen, Grimehouse and Maxim Starcke - they weren't part of the 2012 performance line-up, so it will definitely get some new, diverse nuances.

This fixture of The Horrorfest is always a highlight at the Labia Theatre over Halloween season (*this time on Halloween night), and always makes for an incredibly unique audio-visual experience you're unlikely to find anywhere else.

While we encourage everyone to dress up across the entire festival in whatever Halloween (or beyond) outfits and costumes they choose, this FAUST performance on Saturday 31 October will be the official Halloween dress-up night, with prizes for the best looks.

The 22nd annual edition of the South African HORRORFEST Film Festival & Halloween event runs across 28 October - 8 November, with new and classic movies, short films you're unlikely to see anywhere else, Bloody Parchment literature night, Halloween dress-up and more.

This year we are also looking at resurrecting the on-line streaming chapter of the festival for those outside of Cape Town and in other parts of South Africa who can't attend the cinema shows.

More classics at the HORRORFEST will include:

a special 16mm film projection (8 Nov)

and the ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW audience participation screening (30 Oct)

The Makabra Ensemble was created in 2006 by Sonja Ruppersberg (Terminatryx, Isobel), Paul Blom (Terminatryx, V.O.D, F8), Sean Ou Tim (Lark, Mr Sakitumi, Battery 9, Jeremy Loops), Matthijs van Dijk (The ShhArt Ensemble, Dawntreader), Simon Ratcliffe (Lark), and was later joined by Ronnie Belcher (Terminatryx, The Damned Crows, Gramlich). Across the years special guests have joined some of the performances including Grimehouse, Charles East, Francois Blom, The Crackpot Realist and more, plus returning guests Sara Eksteen and Maxim Starcke.

With over a dozen silent feature film adaptations (and the short Frankenstein) , some of the movies The Makabra Ensemble re-scored since 2006 include Nosferatu, The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari, The Phantom Of The Opera, Metropolis, Haxan, Maciste In Hell, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Vampyr, Faust, The Phantom Carriage, The Fall Of The House Of Usher, Dante's Inferno, Der Golem.
