Raised in Mpumalanga, Betty Brown's relationship with sound started long before she had a name for it — humming melodies, tapping out rhythms on walls and furniture, turning stray words into poems and poems into lyrics. What began as a child's private habit has grown into one of South African R&B's most distinctive new voices, one built on smooth vocals, unfiltered emotion, and melodies that move like smoke.
Her sound draws from traditional R&B and soul, threaded through with African rhythm and a touch of electronic texture — music that doesn't chase trends so much as sit with feeling. Tracks like "Rather Be Alone" and "Hometown" have carried her past a million combined streams on Spotify and YouTube, resonating with listeners drawn to music that functions less like entertainment and more like medicine for the soul.
For Betty Brown, making her HER Series debut is about the same thing that's driven her from the start: connection. As she puts it herself, music is one of the most honest ways people can meet each other — every song an invitation to feel, reflect, and share in something real. Joining a series built to celebrate women in music and hold space for authentic artistry is, in her words, an honor she doesn't take lightly.
Expect an evening of sincerity and storytelling — Betty Brown at her most unguarded, in a room built for exactly that kind of night.
ABOUT HER: DIVAS IN CONCERT
HER is Divas in Concert x Untitled Basement's Women's Month live music series, bringing together legendary and emerging South African women artists across nine shows running throughout the month of August. This is the second season of the series, following its debut run in March 2026.
At its core, HER exists to give South African women in music a stage built specifically to hold them — pairing established names with rising voices, and treating each show as both a celebration and a document of the women shaping the country's musical history in real time.
