Born and raised in Mamelodi, Pretoria, Gabi Motuba trained as a jazz vocalist at Tshwane University of Technology and has since built one of South African jazz's most singular voices — an artist as much composer and cultural thinker as performer, whose work moves fluidly between jazz, gospel, and the avant-garde. Her catalogue includes Sanctum Sanctorium, Tefiti — Goddess of Creation, The Wretched, and The Sabbath — a body of work in constant conversation with history, memory, and the politics of being witnessed. In 2026, that body of work earned her the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Jazz.
For one night only, Motuba brings that world to Untitled Basement in collaboration with the breathtaking Makhanda Kwantu Choir, under the direction of Kutlwano "Kepa" Kepadisa. This isn't simply a concert — it's a meeting of voices, spirit, memory, and sound, where jazz, choral music, improvisation, and storytelling converge into something deeply human.
The evening moves through music from The Sabbath, alongside a first glimpse of Motuba's forthcoming album, Sounds of a Black Girl — a work exploring tenderness, resilience, ancestry, and the limitless possibilities of the Black imagination. Expect soaring harmonies, fearless improvisation, moments of stillness and celebration, and music that asks its audience to listen beyond what they hear.
Imagined for a single evening only, this collaboration will not happen again in quite the same way. Once it's over, it's over — which is exactly why it's worth being in the room for.
ABOUT HER: DIVAS IN CONCERT
HER is Divas in Concert x Untitled Basement's Women's Month live music series, bringing together legendary and emerging South African women artists across nine shows running throughout the month of August. This is the second season of the series, following its debut run in March 2026.
At its core, HER exists to give South African women in music a stage built specifically to hold them — pairing established names with rising voices, and treating each show as both a celebration and a document of the women shaping the country's musical history in real time.
