Pretoria-born Rorisang Sechele found her way to music through classical training before jazz claimed her fully — she went on to study Jazz and Popular Music at Tshwane University of Technology, graduating cum laude, and was later selected for the prestigious Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band under the mentorship of acclaimed pianist and composer Dr Nduduzo Makhathini. That grounding has carried her onto stages alongside artists like Lisette Spinnler and Sun-EL Musician, and as a member of The Anchored Quartet, she's collaborated with some of South Africa's most respected names, including Simmy, Msaki, and Ami Faku.
In 2025, Sechele stepped fully into her own with the release of her debut EP, In Full Bloom — The Seed, the first instalment of a planned trilogy exploring growth, identity, and transformation. The project marked a turning point — singing in Tswana for the first time, and using the music to trace her own coming of age, both as a musician and as an adult finally understanding who she is. The EP's reception has been striking: a feature on Spotify's JazzNXT playlist, nominations across the 2025 Urban Music Awards, Mzantsi Jazz Awards, and Basadi in Music Awards, and a sold-out Jazz in Jozi performance made possible by South Africa's Digital Mobility Fund.
What began as a classically trained voice lending itself to other people's stages has, in a short space of time, become something entirely her own — a young jazz artist writing her own story, one bloom at a time.
ABOUT HER: DIVAS IN CONCERT
HER is Divas in Concert x Untitled Basement's Women's Month live music series, bringing together legendary and emerging South African women artists across nine shows running throughout the month of August. This is the second season of the series, following its debut run in March 2026.
At its core, HER exists to give South African women in music a stage built specifically to hold them — pairing established names with rising voices, and treating each show as both a celebration and a document of the women shaping the country's musical history in real time.
