ABOUT

Babalwa played along with Lucas Senyatso a few weeks ago and blew us away. a voice from the heavens, I had to have her back. Her band is George Werner on piano, Norman Saul on bass and Athi Sokuyeka on drums. Bio to follow
Babalwa Mentjies:  is an accomplished young jazz singer originally from Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape Province. Currently residing in Khayelitsha, Cape Town in the Western Cape Provice. She is a polished songwriter and a great vocalist/entertainer, graduate of UKZN: School of Music under the directorship of Darius Brubeck, teacher at IMAD.  She knows exactly how to interact with various audiences in all levels.  Babalwa has performed a lot of gigs i.e.(Centre for Jazz & Popular Music: UKZN, BAT Centre, Jazzy Rainbow,including corporate events for companies such as: Transnet, Investec, National Heritage Council, Durban Film Festival, KPMG, Ethekwini Municipality: Mayor’s Awards; EJazz Appreciation Society, & Book Launch:  The Lighter Side of RobbenIsland (2012)hosted by Makana Investment Corporation. She performed with a number of well-known jazz musicians to name a few; Feya Faku, Neil Gonsalves, Sazi Dlamini, and many more. In 2008 she was invited by both the National Heritage Council and the Embassy of South Africa in Athens, Greece to perform at the annual Heritage Celebration Event.   She also  performed at the 2014 Standard Bank National Arts Festival:  Mainstream Jazz – National Arts Festival which was  held in her home town Grahamstown alongside the  likes of Gloria Bosman, Melanie Scholtz, Tutu Poane, Nomfundo Xaluva and many more. In 2015 & 2017 she performed at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival with Bongani Sotshononda’s band. Is currently performing with the great George Werner & IMAD teachers, Afro Fiesta, Governer Tiggy Tafari (Jamaica), Roots Rockers and others.
