Folk Memoir Presents: Senna-Marie & Itai Hakim

Sat Aug 15, 19:00 - Sat Aug 15, 22:00

The Artistry, Black Brick

ABOUT

A room that holds space for them.

Folk Memoir is a musical showcase series that serves as a space where the boundaries of contemporary

sonic storytelling are explored and reimagined.

Johannesburg audiences will have the opportunity to experience the next episode of the series,

featuring three distinct sets: solo performances from Senna-Marie and Itai Hakim, and a collaborative

closing set that explores the intersection of voice, guitar, and the possibilities of a new creation.

This is an evening of story, song, and shared presence: an invitation to sit in a room that holds space for

you.

Senna-Marie is a Johannesburg-based songwriter and interdisciplinary artist bringing gentle attention to the necessary frictions that accompany intimacy. Rooted in the emotional resonance of her lyricism, her songs have an honesty and humour; while heart-on-sleeve, they also carry curious sub-text, teasing at broader conditions of uncertainty that are sensed in the body and carried into everyday experience through habit, relation and conflict.

Senna has recently returned from a music residency in Basel, Switzerland following the presentation of her song Threshold at the World Biodiversity Forum, Davos. Notable performances include: Nirox Arts Foundation, Black Labone, Park Acoustics, and MAP Studio Cafe (London, UK).

Itai Hakim is a multifaceted musician and performance poet who reshapes folklore into a contemporary,

socially resonant art form. Singing in Venda and Tsonga, he uses linguistic code-switching as a form of

rhythmic dislocation, a deliberate slowness that resists spectacle. His guitar moves between folk and

blues, and his words land like a conversation you did not know you needed to have.

At the center of his work is intent rather than genre. He approaches sound as a site of convergence

between tradition and experimentation, as he moves fluidly between music, spoken word, and

storytelling, engaging both emotional and intellectual registers.

He has closed conferences for the Democracy Works Foundation, performed at TEDxJohannesburg, and

collaborated with institutions across Europe. Hakim explores sound as both social infrastructure and

spiritual technology, an embodied practice of listening that reimagines how collective healing and

responsibility can be felt and rehearsed.
