every first thursday, melville stops being a suburb and becomes an art walk route.
galleries, studios, markets and creative spaces along 4th avenue, 7th street, main road and bamboo lifestyle centre open late, and you walk between them. art, live music, workshops, night markets, and a few things you can't categorise until you're standing in one.
august '26 is ladies first.
over sixty artists and creators, and the programme belongs to the women shaping joburg's art scene.
a few of them: gloria, tedx speaker and poet, running sessions on the hour on a floor of pillows and candles. maitemogelo mphela's collaborative piece, where women leave traces of themselves in a shared work. the wall of gratitude at hotel hope, where you write down the name of a woman who shaped you, and leave inspired to spread hope through your own words. at dala dank they hand you a tile and you paint it into the mosaic. comedian aiden ho puts the stand-up down and picks up calligraphy and origami at six. and on the jam rooftop, after hours: ten artists, a jazz band, dancers and djs.
we're closing out cosy first thursdays with an ode to imbokodo.

look out for a mam marshal in a green jozi my jozi hi-vis vest. they'll scan your ticket and fit your wristband, then hand you your map and programme, your guide to every venue, exhibition and activation for the evening.
on the vip tour? meet your guide, aubrey, of snaps on seventh at the stairs at the entrance to the 27 boxes parkade on 4th avenue. the walk leaves at 5pm sharp.
not parking at 27 boxes? ask a marshal for a shuttle to the vip meeting point at 4.50pm.
