ABOUT

Florals look complicated until you see them as shapes and gestures, not petals and leaves. This workshop is all about changing that.

Learn how to take any flower — a photo, a bloom on your desk, whatever catches your eye and break it down into the simple shapes and brushstrokes that read as a flower, without painting every detail. This hands-on session covers the techniques for turning a reference into a loose, confident floral painting of your own.

You'll get a chance to practice the techniques in class and ask questions as we go.

We'll cover the following:

  • Practice some common flowers as a starting point (lavender, daisies, leafy stem, coneflowers, etc)
  • Using a reference as a starting point, not a template to copy
  • Breaking a flower down into simple shapes and gestures
  • Brushstrokes for petals, leaves and stems
  • Wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques for soft and crisp edges
  • Layering and building up a bloom

All levels welcome and materials included.

ABOUT YOUR FACILITATOR

Fair warning: Mareli Basson will talk about colour for as long as you let her. Ask anyone who's seen her work - vibrant is the word that comes up most. But the thing she loves most isn't the result. It's the moment someone discovers what they can do with it.

Her watercolour workshops are an invitation into that discovery. Armed with a BA in Applied Design and years of collecting knowledge across mediums, she goes deep, and her students feel it. Several have already come back for more.

The medium is the doorway - accessible, playful, and just unpredictable enough to keep you honest. What's on the other side looks different for everyone. Some find a new practice. Some find colour itself. Some just find an afternoon that feels like breathing.

No experience necessary. Curiosity is strongly encouraged. Nerdy tangents included at no extra cost.
