The Churches of Parkview

Sat Jul 25, 10:00 - Sat Jul 25, 12:00

Third Church of Christ, Scientist

ABOUT

Parkview is home to a remarkable variety of churches, including Anglican, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Dutch Reformed, Christian Science and Coptic. These churches and their congregations reflect different traditions of faith, worship and community life.

Join JHF guides Kathy Munro, Karen Curry and Eugenie Drake for a leisurely stroll as we explore the history of these churches, the stories of their congregations, and the role they played in shaping the suburb.

From traditional church forms with soaring spires to more restrained and modern expressions of faith, we will encounter stained glass, memorials, places of worship and spaces designed for quiet reflection and solitude.

We will also uncover the history of Parkview. Developed by the Corner House Group in the early 1900s, it was planned as a garden suburb with schools, churches, shops, a post office and police station all close at hand. It was also close to the tram line that once ran along Jan Smuts Avenue, while the Zoo and Zoo Lake are within easy reach.

Today Parkview remains one of Johannesburg’s most attractive and enduring suburbs, combining a strong sense of community with a rich architectural heritage. Join us for a unique exploration of Parkview, its heritage, history, and heart.

Please wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunblock. As it is a walking tour a reasonable level of mobility is required.
