Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden
ABOUT
The Witwatersrand National Botanical Garden with its spectacular Witpoortjie Waterfall was opened in 1987 for the enjoyment and enrichment of the public.
Featuring a beautiful assortment of plant life and public-art sculptures, a river also flows through the gardens and into the Muldersdrift area that was once home to Australopithecus africanus (our early Hominid ancestors), Tswana Iron Age farmers, Boer settlers and hopeful gold prospectors.
Join expert JHF guides Sandy Murray and David Fleminger as we explore the beauty of the indigenous plantlife, winter flowers in their glory, the secluded bird hide, and the natural vegetation of the Roodekrans Ridge.
The hike ends at the Witpoortjie Waterfall. The rock bands in this secluded kloof are an excellent example of the geological structure of the Witwatersrand Ridges on which the City of Gold was established. For those who are interested, a steep walk up to the top of the ridge is available. And don’t forget to bring along your binoculars and try to spot the famous Black Eagles who nest on the cliffs nearby.
After the tour, fetch a picnic lunch from your car or enjoy a meal at Eagles’ Fare Restaurant and spend the afternoon enjoying the park (for your own account).
We will meet at the entrance to the gardens. Please wear good walking shoes, suitable clothing, and bring along drinking water and a snack.
The hike requires a good level of fitness (a high level of fitness is required if you want to take the path to the top of the ridge).
