Victoria Yards – An Urban Oasis in Joburg East

Situated just east Johannesburg’s CBD, between Bertrams and Judith’s Paarl, Lorentzville is one of the city’s oldest and most character-filled suburbs.

Established in 1892 on land that once formed part of the Doornfontein farm, the suburb was named after the Lorentz family, prominent landowners in the area. Over the decades, Lorentzville became home to generations of Jewish working-class families, Portuguese immigrants, and a vibrant mix of communities from across Africa, forming a rich cultural tapestry.

Despite the pressures faced by many inner-city suburbs, Lorentzville continues to embrace its heritage through its surviving semi-detached houses, face-brick architecture, and enduring sense of community. The area has also been home to a number of notable residents over the years, including Mahatma Gandhi, William Kentridge and Sol Kerzner.

At the heart of the precinct lies Victoria Yards, one of Johannesburg’s most exciting examples of urban regeneration. Originally constructed in 1913 as a steam laundry complex, the once-neglected industrial site has undergone a remarkable transformation into a thriving creative hub filled with artist studios, artisan workshops, urban agriculture initiatives, design spaces, galleries, restaurants, and community projects.
