THE ART OF HOUGAARD WINTERBACH

Die kunstenaar Hougaard Winterbach skep al vir vyf dekades werk wat die grense tussen sogenaamde “hoë kuns” en popkultuur vervaag. In sy werk sien ’n mens die invloed van die Westerse kunstradisie, maar ook merkers van strokiesprente, rock-ikonografie ensomeer. Die boek Rites of Passage – The Art of Hougaard Winterbach is deels 'n kunstenaarsbiografie en deels 'n bestekopname, ’n dokument wat die kunstenaar se ontwikkeling oor 50 jaar opteken, met afbeeldings van tekeninge, juweliersware en beeldhouwerke. Anton Kannemeyer, ’n jare lange vriend van Winterbach, sal met hom gesels oor sy werk en oor hierdie publikasie waarin sy reis as kunstenaar, belangstellings, invloede en hartstogte byeengebring word.

THE ART OF HOUGAARD WINTERBACH

For five decades, artist Hougaard Winterbach has created work that blurs the boundaries between so-called “high art” and pop culture. In his art one sees the influence of the Western artistic tradition, but also markers of comic strips, rock iconography, and more. The book Rites of Passage – The Art of Hougaard Winterbach is part artist biography and part survey, a document that records the artist’s development over 50 years, with images of drawings, jewelry and sculptures. Anton Kannemeyer, a longtime friend of Winterbach, will be in conversation with him about his work and about this publication, which brings together his journey as an artist, his interests, influences, and passions.
