ABOUT

Red Tape Riot would describe their music as Groove-Pop, an evolution of all the band
member’s influences that range from the post-punk sounds of the 80’s, to the swagger
of Arctic Monkeys and The Cure, through to elements of Incubus, Dire Straits, 2 Door
Cinema Club, and everything in between. Culminating into an altogether unique foot
tapping contrast between heartfelt melodies and strong party grooves.

Red Tape Riot has been earmarked as one of the most exciting additions to the South
African music industry since forming in 2012. Over the last 4 years they have cemented
themselves into the South African live performance scene, and have created a loyal and
steadily growing fan base. Recent live performance triumphs include playing on the
Main Stage at the internationally acclaimed 25 000 person strong Rocking The Daisies
music festival in Darling, CT, along with stand-out performances at many other large
scale festivals such as The Wacky Wine Festival, Darling Beer Festival, National Coffee &
Chocolate Festival, SA Bike Festival, Electric Vines, as well as many of the top live music
venues in their home country of SA – The Assembly, Mercury Live, Café Roux, Aandklas,
Hillcrest Quarry, to name but a few.

John Battersby (Vocals) and Rubin van der Rheede (Bass Guitar) are the founding
members of the band and are joined by Justin Levitt (Electric Guitar), Marc Klein
(Drums and Sampler) and Jared Phillips (Keys and Synths), each bringing their unique
angle and energy to the outfit.

Red Tape Riot’s first single ‘Love Is a Feeling’ was released on the 8th of August 2012.
Soon after, it won the 5FM weekly ‘Treffer’ and along with the video, was play-listed on
MK Music Channel on DSTV and TuksFM, as well as 9 other SA radio stations. Since
then, Red Tape Riot have released 8 more singles - Been Here Before, Wide Awake,
Dreams, Fall, Dirty City Problem, So Much Better, Mexico, and most recently You and
Me – which went on to achieve a record-breaking 8 weeks at No.1 on national radio
station 5FM’s Top 10 Indie Chart, and finished at No. 25 on the Top 100 songs of 2016
chart.

The band has embarked on numerous successful national and coastal tours over the
past few years, playing in main cities such as Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth, and
their home base of Cape Town, and many other smaller town up and down the
country, further establishing themselves as a national South African band to be
reckoned with.

In February of 2016 Red Tape Riot signed a management and booking deal with Haven
Music International (Just Jinjer, Monark, Jimmy Nevis) in order to take the music to
new heights, with many exciting tours on the cards, both national and international.
“The essence of Red Tape Riot is the authentic energy that we bring to the stage,
whether it be in front of 20 people or 20 Thousand people - a dream show is just one
where there are people who are singing the words back to you while you are playing.
There is no better feeling”, says John Battersby.

The band embarked on a 3 month European tour in July of 2017, including a feature
show at the 02 Academy Islington in August, as well as many other iconic venues such
as The Half Moon Putney, The Bedford, and Finsbury Arms, and have just released their
latest album ‘Atmosphere’ which was released at the end of April 2017.
