Paul Hanmer: A Tribute to Feya Faku

Featuring: Special guest DJ Bob

Live at Untitled Basement | ?Sunday, 14 June 2026

?Experience a profound evening of memory, melody, and mastery at Untitled Basement as legendary South African pianist and composer Paul Hanmer a tribute to the late, great Feya Faku.

?Last year, the two jazz icons were set to share a stage in Switzerland, a performance cut tragically short by Feya’s untimely passing just a day before the show. Now, Paul Hanmer has painstakingly assembled the exact powerhouse lineup originally intended for that European tour—bringing together a brilliant rhythm section, brass, and a full string quartet to celebrate a truly beautiful artist and human being.

?Stepping into the spotlight on flugelhorn is the incredible Sydney Mavundla, supported by a stellar rhythm section featuring Nhlanhla Radebe on bass and Bernice Boikanyo on drums. Elevating the performance into something entirely ethereal is a string quartet composed of Bonolo Kgaile and Lebogang Ledwaba (violins), Khotso Langa (viola), and Daliwonga Tshangela (violoncello).

?The evening will feature deep, evocative solo piano moments, sweeping quartet performances, and the original scores meant for that Swiss stage. Audiences will also be treated to brand-new arrangements written specifically for this tribute, including a powerful reimagining of Feya's "Broken Light"—a poignant tribute to Stephen Bantu Biko.

?About the Artist

?For over 40 years, Paul Hanmer has shaped the soundscape of South African music. His work seamlessly bridges jazz and classical genres, resulting in a sound that is at once cerebral and minimalist, yet deeply rooted in the distinct rhythms of the Cape Flats and Friday afternoon township vibes. From his landscape-altering 1997 debut Trains to Taung to collaborations with legends like Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, and Sibongile Khumalo, Hanmer remains a titan of South African pianism.

?This is more than a concert; it is a musical wake, a celebration of friendship, and a historic night of South African jazz that is absolutely not to be missed.
