ABOUT

Johannesburg’s story begins deep beneath the earth, with the formation and subsequent discovery of the main reef. As such, long before it grew to become Africa’s financial powerhouse, this landscape was defined by gold — and by the people who came from across the world to extract it.

Following the initial gold rush of 1886, many of the early mining and financial companies in the burgeoning town set up their offices along Main Street in Ferreirasdorp, on the edge of what is now the city centre. Today, many of these pioneering institutions have moved on to other parts of the city but the original mining district remains, with its beautiful buildings, sculptures, public art and historical relics intact.

Now semi-pedestrianised, the mining district is not just a place; it tells the origin story of modern Johannesburg. And like many old cities, it is evolving. Fast. With a new focus on education and social development, this part of Old Joburg is transforming to impact the future in an exciting and positive way.

Join expert JHF guide Eugenie Drakes on a leisurely stroll to experience the ‘new human-centred gold’ that is being mined in this district. Starting at the old Anglo American office building we will walk down Main Street, immersing ourselves in the stories of the district’s past, present and future. The streets are waiting for you!

Please wear good walking shoes and bring along sun protection and water. As this is an inner city tour, please leave your valuables at home. There are cameras and street security, however. Parking can be difficult so we recommend that you Uber.
