St George's Cathedral

ABOUT

?This December, the soaring trusses of St George's Cathedral will again ring with Handel's beloved choral work, Messiah, sung by The Symphony Choir of Cape Town (SCCT)

“Messiah” is an oratorio which was composed in 1741 by George Frederic Handel, with the scriptural text compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible (with some from the Book of Common Prayer).  It was first performed in Dublin in April 1742 and has become one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music.  The work has been described as “a commentary on Jesus Christ’s nativity, passion, resurrection and ascension”, beginning with God’s promises spoken by the prophets and ending with Christ’s glorification in heaven.

We will present an abridged version of the oratorio, however, the original numbering within the work will be adhered to.

The Symphony Choir of Cape Town, conducted by Alexander Fokkens, and joined by acclaimed soloists: Leah Gunter (Soprano), Jacobi Beckenstein (Mezzo), Bongani Makhaya (Tenor) and Riaan Hunter (Bass)
