Washington DC Youth Orchestra is coming to South Arica

Evan Ross Solomon, Artistic Director

In July 2026, the DC Youth Orchestra will travel to South Africa, continuing its long tradition of cultural exchange through music. Founded in 1960 by music educator Lyn McLain, DCYOP has grown from 60 students into one of the nation’s leading youth music education organizations, serving young musicians from across the Washington, DC region.

DCYOP provides accessible orchestral training for students ages 4½ to 18, welcoming young people regardless of background or prior experience. Through ensemble rehearsals, group lessons, chamber music, masterclasses, summer programs, and international touring, students develop musical excellence, discipline, confidence, and community.

The orchestra has performed across the United States and in 24 countries, including recent tours to Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic. DCYOP was also the first youth orchestra to perform at the Kennedy Center and has collaborated with artists including Aaron Copland, Yo-Yo Ma, Gustavo Dudamel, and Lorin Maazel.

Through its 2026 South Africa tour, DCYOP will share the talent and spirit of Washington, DC’s young musicians while building meaningful connections across cultures.
