Khongolose Khommanding Khomissars

Directed by multi-award-winning Mandla Mbothwe, Khongolose Khommanding Khomissars is a thought-provoking, poetic sociopolitical township satire that offers a timely introspection into South Africa’s political economy amid the ongoing “tender rush.”

Set against the backdrop of this urgent societal phenomenon, the production explores the intricate game of snakes and ladders as a metaphor for the unpredictable nature of tender systems—once concealed, now increasingly visible to the public—and the often capricious outcomes of wealth, power, and corruption.

Originally written for an all-male Black cast, Mbothwe’s adaptation moves beyond these confines, expanding across race and gender to deepen its contemporary resonance.

The narrative critiques both legal and illegal forms of corruption, examining the profound effects of poverty and the violence it perpetuates across communities. It underscores the relentless desire for accumulation, interrogating the monopolisation of resources and the manipulative behaviours of those navigating this volatile landscape—both seasoned players and opportunistic newcomers.

With evocative music by Lungiswa Plaatjie, dynamic choreography by Mzokuthula “Mzo” Gasa, and physical direction by Jayne Batsovin, the production is further elevated by innovative lighting design from Themba Stewards. It features a vibrant ensemble of current and graduating students from UCT’s Centre for Theatre, Dance & Performance Studies (CTDPS). Costume design is by Leigh Bishop, and set design by Lungile Cindi.
