Young Creators: Hand Tool Skills Workshop
Sat Jun 13, 09:00 - Sun Jun 14, 17:00
Cape Town Creative Academy
ABOUT
Build with confidence and competence from the very beginning. Students learn the proper use and maintenance of basic hand tools, developing accuracy, control, and an understanding of how each tool functions within the broader making process. Through carefully guided exercises, participants will complete simple project builds that reinforce measurement, marking out, cutting, and assembly techniques.
The course explores traditional planing methods, the controlled use of chisels, and the principles of hand-cut joinery, allowing students to understand how strong, precise joints are formed without reliance on power tools. Both Western and Japanese tools are introduced and compared, highlighting their design philosophies, ergonomics, cutting actions, and the cultural approaches behind their development. Participants will gain hands-on experience using each system to appreciate their unique strengths and applications.
A dedicated sharpening component covers the “scary-sharp” method, teaching students how to achieve razor-sharp edges with readily available materials.
