the melville art mile is a monthly first thursday evening event that activates our galleries,
markets, and creative spaces along 4th Avenue, 7th Street and Bamboo Lifestyle Centre, creating
a walking route of art, music, workshops, markets, and immersive experiences.
What's On?
A few we would circle on the map:
- Resource Gallery launches Crown Heavy, a group show with Thokozani Mthiyane, Sherman Baloyi, Thokozani Madonsela and friends (this one runs 18:00 to 21:00).
- Agterplaas Guesthouse hosts the Alice Art Gallery and the wild, whimsical world of celebrated South African painter David Kuijers.
- Erf350 Melville Studios brings the group exhibition You Have the Right to Art, featuring Casper Ntshangase, Lungile Mbokane, Ludumo Maqabuka and more.
- Stokvel Gallery goes street with Busta Boltoon's tattoo, cartoon and graffiti-inspired paintings.
- Daily (furniture store) at 27 Boxes pairs Thamsanga Mfuphi's Inkunzi Isematholeni with Ruan Vanzyl's haunting Duality.
- JCW Rooftop Gallery shows Paper/People, art for good in support of Joburg Child Welfare, the 117-year-old child-protection organisation.
Want your hands dirty? Avalon Art runs printmaking demos and wooden-gnome painting (with a glass of gluhwein for the cold), Studio 79 hosts a collage and handmade-paper sip-and-paint in printmaker-turned-painter Martin Wenkidu's studio, and Six Cocktail Bar hides Shante's blind henna pop-up, where pairs secretly pick micro-tattoos for each other and only see the result when it is done. Those three carry a small workshop fee. Every other stop is free to wander, and there is live music too, from Joanne Cooper at Nuno's at the Melville Artisanal's night market to Xolisa Ntshikilana's guitar. Anna Stroud brings the students of Assembly Improv for an epic performance from 6 on just after a Hip-Hop Break Dance battle at the 27 Boxes Amphitheatre.
