Digimethods Post-SACOMM Workshop 2026

ABOUT
On Saturday 12 September 2026, the Wits Centre for Journalism will host a workshop examining digital and computational tools for researching the media. The workshop, a post-SACOMM conference event, is limited to 20 participants. No prior skills are needed.
The workshop will be facilitated by Dr Alette Schoon of Rhodes University, who will run through a series of hands-on demonstrations in which participants can try out the following tools:
- Visualising data
- Scraping data
- Vibe coding
- Civic Signal African newspapers dataset
- Network graphs
- Machine learning and NLP e.g. word clouds, sentiment analysis, topic modelling
Participants will need to have their own laptops and chargers with internet connectivity and will need to load and install the following before class:
- Webscraper.io plugin for Chrome
- Orange data mining, including Anaconda
The workshop will take place at the Wits Centre for Journalism, Floor 12, Es'kia Mphahlele Building, Braamfontein.
Lunch will be served, and attendance for the full day is required.
