ABOUT
Wits Theatre presents: Shane Cooper and the Spirit Whisper x The Brother Moves On
Africa Day Double Bill
Wits Theatre presents a special Africa Day double bill featuring prolific generational bassist Shane Cooper and his new ensemble Shane Cooper and the Spirit Whisper alongside Johannesburg’s live music institution The Brother Moves On.
Programme
19:00 – Doors Open
19:30 – Shane Cooper and the Spirit Whisper
21:00 – The Brother Moves On
The Brother Moves On
Established in 2009, The Brother Moves On is a tradition-trouncing, transatlantic Afrocentric, futuristically ancient fusion project that jackknifes between off-world spectral dub metal, hyper-rhythmic rock psychedelia, indie township music, and astro-Afro free jazz.
Taking cues from that other “Brother from another planet” Sun Ra, the group embraces a multi-genre, multi-aesthetic approach, re-challenging hip hop’s five pillars — MCing, B-Boying, DJing, graffiti, and knowledge of self — into a conceptechnic art project incorporating historical, political, and sociological perspectives.
— Stacey, Pan African Space Station
For this Africa Day edition, the band will perform music from Hedzoleh Sounds in celebration of Hugh Masekela’s journey to the home of funk.
