The audience will hear the young ensemble perform beloved classical pieces from the Suzuki Method, showcasing the foundational technique and discipline required for every budding string player. Alongside these works, the children will bring vibrant energy to the stage with upbeat African pieces that reflect their roots and joy for music. About the Music Sprouts Access Program
The Music Sprouts Access Program started in January 2024 in Storms River Village, Tsitsikamma. It was founded by local musicians and music teachers Chanel and Michaela Gardner who wanted to share the joy that music brings them with children in their community. The program gives local children access to music education, completely free of charge. Lessons take place at a church hall, and by early 2024 more than 60 children were already attending the main community class once a week. Today, over 70 children from Storms River and the surrounding areas are part of the program, receiving lessons on violin, guitar, percussion, pennywhistle and voice.
Children move through the program based on commitment, dedication and attitude. Everyone starts in the Community Class, where showing up consistently and being respectful are key. From there, students who are ready, are invited to join instrument group classes, which are mainly focused on the violin. With exceptional commitment, a student can reach the final level, where they are given their own instrument and receive weekly private lessons.
The Music Sprouts Access Program operates as an outreach initiative under the Community Youth Collective (CYC), a registered non-profit. This non-profit relies entirely on donations and sponsorships to keep lessons running and to provide instruments for the children.
Music Sprouts is a big part of the community of Storms River Village. The students and teachers have performed at many community events since its inception in 2024. At its heart, Music Sprouts is about giving children the chance to learn, grow, and experience the joy of music together. Seeing the students progress from their first notes to performing for the village - and even auditioning for provincial orchestras - shows what's possible when a community backs its young musicians.
