ABOUT

This topic, presented over two days, highly relevant to today’s context, will enable participants to:

  • Distinguish between normative and problematic sexual behaviours in children across different developmental stages;
  • Identify key risk factors and contributing influences, including trauma, environmental exposure, and neurodevelopmental factors;
  • Explain the theoretical frameworks supporting sexual behavioural problems, such as trauma, attachment, social learning, and self-regulation models;
  • Understand relevant South African legal frameworks, including the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 and the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, and apply these within ethical decision-making processes;
  • Respond appropriately to incidents involving sexual behaviour between children, and implementing evidence-based intervention strategies to assist affected children.
  • Apply practical tools, develop realistic and contextually relevant safety plans, collaborate effectively with schools and multidisciplinary teams, make informed referral decisions, and incorporate ethical principles and cultural considerations throughout assessment and intervention;
  • Maintain awareness of your professional wellbeing and the impact of vicarious trauma.
