ABOUT
Spha (Siphathisene) Mdlalose is a jazz singer, songwriter, voice over artist and radio presenter who was born in Durban inthe township of Umlazi. Her family’s move to Cape Town in 1996 prompted Spha to join the school choir something that would change the trajectory of her life forever.
To date,Spha has performed alongside notable artists like YvonneChaka Chaka, Micasa, Oliver Mtukudzi, Neo Muyanga, Zwai Bala, Sibongile Khumalo, Kabomo, Afrotraction, Monique Bingham and other formidable artists in the music industry. She has also been featured on numerous albums including that of SAMA award nominee trumpet player Lwanda Gogwana, “Mbokodo Award- winner” for ‘Best Female in Jazz’, Thandi Ntuli, virtuoso bass player Benjamin Jephta and saxophonist Sisonke Xonti.
Spha has performedat the Cape Town International Jazz festival on numerous occasionsand has also performed as a solo act at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival’s free concert alongside US soul singers Allan Stone and Patti Austin . In 2016, Spha was fortunate to tour with Grammy award winner Josh Groban when he visited South Africa on his “Straight to You” tour. In the same year , Spha also toured with Grammy award winning gospel artist, Israel Houghton who performed in Zimbabwe. Most recently, Spha was invitedto perform at the Desmond Tutu Foundation for the 13nth Desmond annual lecture held in Cape Town in 2023. The keynote speakerfor the eventwas Miranda FrenchGates. In 2024,she performed as a solo act at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival’s Diphala Stage.
Mdlalose’s performances are one of a kind creating unforgettable experiences for audiences attending her shows.Her stage presenceand wit are unmatched, coupledwith a voice that is smooth, deep, and quietly powerful. In 2019 she released her debut solo album entitled “Indlel’eyekhaya” to much acclaim. The album was nominated for 3 South African Music Awards, including Best Jazz Album and Best Female Artist. The album won her 2 Mzantsi Jazz Awards for Best Jazz Album and Best Newcomer. After a 6 year hiatus, Mdlalose is back with a bang, having released a single called iThemba in April 2026. The single is a pre lude to a full body of work expected for release in 2026.
