ABOUT
A varied programme ranging from European classical to Buskaid’s very own brand of Afro Jazz and Kwela. Buskaid’s ensemble comprises some of the most versatile young string musicians in South Africa. Renowned worldwide for their stylistic performances of classical music, they are also able to switch seamlessly into classic pop, improv and Afro Jazz. Tshidiso and Bongani Boikanyo (brothers) and Koketso & Tshegofatso Mphela (sisters) are cousins and current members of Buskaid: this year they will feature as soloists in Mozart’s youthful Serenata Notturna, which also includes timpani (aka African drum!); the focal moment of the concert is Bruch’s poignant Kol Nidrei, featuring Koketso as cello soloist. There will also be music by Rameau, Bach, Sibelius and Elgar, and then the musicians’ own take on Amapiano and Afropop, including songs by Mango Groove, Lira, Jonny Clegg and Freshly Ground.
