Glenshiel
ABOUT
Glenshiel is the last Randlord mansion built by Herbert Baker and Frank Fleming, and it’s considered to be one of their most interesting.
Originally commissioned in 1908 by former opera singer Lady Isabel and her husband, mining magnate Sir William Dalrymple, this palatial ‘butterfly wing’ residence was completed in 1910 and quickly became a hot spot for Joburg’s high society. It was one of the first homes in the emerging city to have both a swimming pool and a tennis court!
In its heyday, the beautiful gardens and expansive reception rooms of Glenshiel played host to glamorous parties, glittering soirees and charity balls. Distinguished guests included Princess Alice, the Countess of Athlone, granddaughter of Queen Victoria.
Join your guide Karen Curry for a wonderful tour of the grounds and first floor of the house. The ticket price includes a donation to St John South Africa - the current owners.
Please wear walking shoes and bring along sun protection, water and snacks, if you wish.
