ABOUT

EDUCATIONAL MUSHROOM FORAY

14 May 2026

Time: 9am - 11.30am

Join us for an informative morning in the forest learning all about the fantastic world of fungi.

Led by avid mycologist Justin Williams, you will gain a new-found appreciation for these amazing organisms beneath our feet. From the delicious to the dangerous, there are plenty of different species to learn about, every one of them telling their own story.

Justin’s love for fungi came at a young age. His first foraging experience was at Tokai Forest in the mid-90s where he recalls being mystified by the different types that grew under the pines. Having been a Veld and Sea mushroom teacher since 2016, Justin combines storytelling and science into a highly enjoyable outdoor experience suitable for all ages. In recent years he has co-authored papers on two new fungi species previously unknown to science – the Cape Morel and the Overstrand Oyster.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

You'll begin the morning off with a light snack and a cup of foraged herbal tea prepared by the Veld and Sea team, before being guided through the forest. There’s a wealth to be learned about the edible, toxic and medicinal fungi. Justin's extensive knowledge on cooking techniques and fungi's role within the ecosystem, along with stories from many years of adventures, will reveal a new and fascinating world to explore.

PLEASE NOTE:

Mushroom foraging is unpredictable and weather-dependent. We could come upon a glut of wild mushrooms for everyone to collect or just happen upon two for toast. Rest assured you will walk away with a bounty of new found knowledge after this immersive experience.
