ABOUT
ANUBHAVA
Uplifting South African hearts through South Indian tradition.
Anubhava marks the culmination of The Southern Roots Residency — a collaborative initiative curated and hosted by The Suriya Project, Aaraadhana, and the KS Natya Kollective.
The residency creates a space for engaging with the cultural traditions of South India while living and practising within a South African context. Rooted in learning, exchange, and community, it brings together artists and participants in a shared exploration of heritage and contemporary experience.
Through a series of Bharatanatyam masterclasses and workshops led by artist-in-residence K. Sarveshan, dancers from across South Africa will engage with the technical, expressive, and cultural foundations of this classical dance form, while deepening their individual and collective practice.
Anubhava, meaning “lived experience”, is the final performance emerging from this journey. The work reflects a shared commitment to learning, discipline, and cultural continuity.
This performance is offered as a fundraiser, supporting both the participating artists and the ongoing development of Bharatanatyam in South Africa. As a living artform, its continuity depends on the support of the communities that engage with it — creating space for artists not only to practise, but to sustain and grow their work.
Bharatanatyam remains a specialised artform, carrying with it generations of knowledge, discipline, and cultural memory. Through this work, the residency contributes to keeping these traditions alive, while opening pathways for the next generation of dancers to learn, embody, and carry them forward.
Supporting our artists. Sustaining our tradition.
