ABOUT

Rags to Riches - A Walking Tour Exploring Muizenberg both Modest and Magnificent

Two Muizenbergs, the tightly-packed dwellings of the Village and the grand homes of Beach Road, are separated only by Alexander Road, but their inhabitants lived in two different worlds. On our walking tour we explore the impressive houses of Beach Road, and hear about the tobacco barons, politicians, retailers and randlords who occupied them. Only the best architects would do for these important clients, and we are able to admire buildings by Baker and his partners, William Hood Grant and other starchitects of the early 20th century.

We then wend our way through the intimate streets of the Village to see the world of Muizenberg’s butchers, bakers, fishmongers and drapers who worked and lived cheek by jowl with the many boarding houses that provided holiday accommodation during the brief but frenetic season. The Village has undergone a revival after a period of urban decay, and its colourful and beautifully maintained buildings are today home to artists and activists.

WHEN: 10h00 on Saturday 18 April.

MEET AT: the corner of Alexander Road and Beach Road. Park at the Pavilion parking lot across the road.

COST: R200 for non-members (booking on Quicket); R100 for members (booking via email at [email protected])
