ABOUT
This one-day training workshop focuses on understanding and responding effectively to harmful sexual behaviours (HSB) in children. Participants will explore the differences between developmentally typical sexual behaviours and behaviours that may be harmful, concerning, or indicative of deeper challenges. The training will provide insight into the possible drivers of harmful sexual behaviours, including developmental, environmental, and trauma-related factors.
The workshop will also introduce evidence-informed frameworks used to assess and respond to HSB, helping professionals think about risk, safety planning, and appropriate therapeutic responses. In addition, participants will gain an overview of the relevant South African legal context, including the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act and the Child Justice Act, and how these influence professional responsibilities when working with children who display harmful sexual behaviours.
This training is designed for social workers, psychologists, educators, child and youth care workers, and other professionals working with children, and aims to strengthen confidence in responding to harmful sexual behaviours in ways that prioritise child protection, accountability, and therapeutic support.
