ABOUT

Yonela Mnana is a recording jazz pianist and singer. His love for music saw him through a rigorous jazz scholarship, studios and stages. His jazz inspired pieces are rooted in his IsiXhosa and Sepedi background where he was born and raised respectively.

His eventual tutelage at the University of Witwatersrand earned him an honours and Master’s degree with distinction. While his institutional experience helped him to articulate himself more distinctly, he remains ever receptive to his everyday local sonic stimulate and lets it effortlessly seep into his music. This is evident in albums of luminary artists such as Herbie Tsoaeli, Mandla Mlangeni, Sisonke Xonti, etc. as well as audio-visual projects by Marcus Wyatt and the Goethe institute.

He continues to teach in Katlehong and Soweto where his developmental aspiration is a gift that keeps on giving to him. He has released a couple of singles and an EP online as well as two albums tiled ‘Baba’ and an international collaboration with Swiss saxophonist Benedikt Reising called ‘Echoes of Marabi’.
