ABOUT
This year the College will be staging ‘After Sainthood’, a coming-of-age theatrical performance exploring the rite of passage from adolescence to adulthood - trying to determine what shapes masculinity in the transition from boyhood to manhood. This is done through thematic concerns such as brotherhood, rebellion, the fight for self-expression within an authoritarian world, the purpose of education, the tension between conformity, individuality and personal passion, betrayal, the importance of finding one’s own voice, the consequences of stifling creativity and autonomy, and the need for love and connection.
The text of Sainthood, written by Tiisetso Mashifane wa Noni, which forms the spine of our production, “unravels the delicate threads of violence within blossoming manhood and its relationship to…sexuality, mental health, and identity under the patronage of masculinity and tradition.”
