ABOUT

Nduduzo Makhathini is an internationally acclaimed South African pianist, composer, and scholar whose work bridges jazz improvisation with African philosophy and spirituality. Born in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, he holds a PhD in Music from Stellenbosch University and is a lecturer and researcher at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's School of the Arts. His artistic and scholarly practice explores jazz through the lens of ba-ntu cosmologies and indigenous knowledge systems.

A multi-award-winning bandleader with twelve albums to his name, Makhathini is signed to the legendary Blue Note Records. He has collaborated with artists such as Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Shabaka Hutchings, Richard Bona, Thandiswa Mazwai, and the WDR Big Band.

Makhathini has performed at major festivals worldwide and recently appeared at Carnegie Hall. His latest album, uNomkhubulwane (2024), draws on Nguni mythology and the healing power of sound.
