ABOUT

Join INSTOPP for an interactive mentorship session with occupational therapist Petro Grové exploring the OT’s role in Low Vision.

Although visual impairment has existed throughout human history, the field of Low Vision has only recently gained increased attention in South Africa. While blindness is often what comes to mind when discussing visual impairment, only about 3% of visually impaired persons are blind, with the majority living with varying degrees of low vision.

This session will introduce participants to the unique assessment and treatment approaches required for individuals with Low Vision, highlighting how this area of practice differs from other rehabilitation modalities. Discussion will also explore how Low Vision frequently co-exists with other conditions such as neurological injuries, neurodevelopmental conditions (including ADD, ADHD, and autism), and psychiatric challenges.

Low Vision remains one of the most prevalent yet often overlooked impairments, both nationally and internationally. This mentorship session will therefore also emphasise the important role of healthcare professionals in recognising signs of Low Vision and understanding when and why to refer. Through real-life discussion and shared clinical insight, this session offers an opportunity for occupational therapists to expand their understanding of a fascinating and growing field of practice.
