Die Matie Studentekoerant – die fakkel brand reeds 85 jaar

‘Studentekoerant word verwelkom’, was die hoofopskrif van Die Matie se eerste uitgawe wat op 1 Augustus 1941 verskyn het. Nou, 85 jaar later, verskyn die Universiteit Stellenbosch se onafhanklike studentekoerant steeds gereeld – deesdae met ’n sterk teenwoordigheid aanlyn en op sosiale media.

Naas joernalistieke integriteit het bepaalde waardes en beginsels Die Matie oor dekades heen gekenmerk – kritiese denke, vreesloosheid, humor, die dokumentering van studentelewe, kreatiwiteit, verantwoordbaarheid van gesagstrukture, jeugdige voortvarendheid, die skuif van grense, demokrasie en menseregte.

Alle oudredaksielede word genooi om Die Matie se roemryke geskiedenis en impak tydens die Tuiskomsnaweek te vier.

Die Matie Student Newspaper – the torch has been burning for 85 years

‘Student newspaper is welcome’, was the headline of Die Matie’s first edition, which was published on 1 August 1941. Now, 85 years later, the independent student newspaper of Stellenbosch University is still published regularly – these days with a strong presence online and on social media.

In addition to journalistic integrity, certain values and principles have characterised Die Matie over the decades – critical thinking, fearlessness, humour, the documentation of student life, creativity, accountability of authority structures, youthful enthusiasm, the pushing of boundaries, democracy and human rights.

All former editorial staff are invited to celebrate Die Matie’s illustrious history and impact during the Homecoming Weekend.
