ABOUT

The Phax trio will be presenting an all South African composition programme
as part of their October concert series in Cape Town. The campaign for new
works is inspired by an ever present need for musicians to support locally written
music.
This eclectic concert series will showcase the Stellenbosch University
composer forum, Kompos, which is an active group of students who work on
film music, orchestral music, chamber music and now, music for this trio. The
composers present various styles including art music, song cycles,
contemporary music, Balkan styled music and neo-classical forms. They
include Carlie Schoonees, Jesse Dreyer, Marco Nachenius, Karl Lobi, Natali
Frenz and Kirsten Adams. The Phax Trio will also be presenting music by
Matthijs van Dijk, a seasoned and well-performed composer, and Clara
Marincowitz.
A powerful wind triumvirate – Eu(PH)onium, S(AX)ophone and Tuba – formed
by the alumni principal players of the South African National Youth Orchestra:
Shaun Acker, Andrea Fisher-Jeffes and Zhaun Gorridon. The Phax trio has
dedicated themselves to composing, and performing, high proficiency
contemporary classical music on instruments that are often boxed in by
musical stereotype.
