Reformation Music Old & New
Sun Nov 5, 16:00 - Sun Nov 5, 17:30
Lutheran Church, Strand Street, Cape Town
ABOUT
2017 marks the 5th centenary of the Lutheran Reformation. Considering its huge implications on subsequent musical developments – the rise of Protestant church music with Heinrich Schütz and JS Bach as most prominent figures – there are good reasons for musical celebrations of the event.
With its vested interest in and accumulated experience of performing sacred music in the tradition of Praetorius, Schütz and various members of the Bach family, the Cape Consort is eminently suited to reflect on the musical legacy of the Reformation and perform representative works in variously contextualized concerts.
The third concert in a series of three different musical programmes featuring newly compiled, newly composed and newly juxtaposed Reformation music respectively, takes place on in the historical Lutheran Church in Strand Street on Sunday, 5 November, at 16:00
A newly composed Reformation Cantata commissioned by the S. Martini congreagtion and premiered on 29 October will be repeated in this concert together with works by Schütz and JS Bach.
Performed by the Cape Consort in collaboration with the Bellville Moravian Brass Band and an ensemble of strings.
