Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct
ABOUT
In the heart of Johannesburg lies Constitution Hill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and historic precinct that once confined both political activists and ordinary citizens. It is also home to the highest court in the land, the Constitutional Court of South Africa.
The Old Fort was built in 1893 and perches above the city, about 1,750 metres above sea level. It offers a sweeping 360° view of Johannesburg and Hillbrow, a reminder of its original military purpose.
Join your guide Andy Chinnah for an emotional journey through the cells, court, and stories of Con Hill - sometimes referred to as Joburg’s Robben Island.
See how former Justice Albie Sachs helped shape the Court to ensure the architecture reflects transparency and dignity. View the site's extensive art collection and the famous wooden doors, featuring a unique font inspired by the handwriting of a blind Constitutional Court judge. From 19th-century fortress to a modern symbol of freedom, this is the story of South Africa.
Please note: Meet at the Visitor’s Centre. There is ample secure parking available in the parkade. The tour will include some walking outdoors so please wear good shoes and bring along sun protection.
