Satyagraha House
ABOUT
Satyagraha House was built in 1907 by the German-Jewish immigrant architect Hermann Kallenbach. Kallenbach designed and built the home for himself, but it became historically significant when he invited his close friend Mahatma Gandhi to live with him between 1908 and 1910.
It was here that Gandhi’s ideas around satyagraha (non-violent resistance) were tested, refined, written up and lived as a political and moral practice during the struggle for Indian civil rights in the Transvaal Colony and Natal.
Today, the property is a museum and guest house that tells the story of the friendship between Gandhi and Kallenbach and the emergence of passive resistance as a political strategy. On this tour, you will explore the tranquil grounds and see the successful preservation work led by heritage architect Rocco Bosman. The visit offers a unique look at how this domestic space became a testing ground for ideas that would eventually change the world.
Hosted by Andy Chinnah and Professor Kathy Munro, the experience also includes a brief visit to the neighboring Pine Street Synagogue.
Light refreshments are included, courtesy of Satyagraha House. Book soon as numbers are limited.
