ABOUT
My Ma se Taal
Distinguished baritone, Dolf Mathee, and acclaimed pianist, Jana Mathee, are set to captivate audiences with their upcoming performance of My Ma se Taal (My Mother’s Language), a concert dedicated to the rich tradition of Afrikaans art song.
This recital will explore themes close to the heart, featuring carefully curated Afrikaans art songs by some of South Africa’s most celebrated composers. Audience members can look forward to an emotionally resonant journey through the language and culture, with works by Johannes Joubert, Gerrit Bon, S. le Roux Marais, Pieter de Villiers, P. J. Lemmer, and Arnold van Wyk.
Divided into thoughtfully themed sections, the programme aims to highlight the poetic beauty and cultural significance embedded within Afrikaans song. Through their expressive performance, the artists strive to honour the linguistic heritage of South Africa and connect audiences to the soul of this musical tradition.
The concert will take place on 10 March 2026 at 18:30 in the NWU School of Music Organ Hall. Tickets are available at Quicket. Join us for an evening of lyrical storytelling and musical excellence that celebrates the language of the heart.
