Khanyisa

ABOUT

Help us build Khanyisa in Langa! In September 2017 we collaborated with SBS Connect on the Khanyisa Project, located at 1 Bennie Street, Langa. The site is home to a long running fruit stall, operated by 4 respected brothers from the area, and we were tasked with boosting the space by designing and implementing permacultre systems to make it a beacon of regeneration in Langa. The site now hosts a massive vegetable garden, as well as a food forest, windbreaks, a pond, and a nursery, with more elements to be added in time. This workshop will be one of many where we actively build Khanyisa, with the aim of getting it to a state of self-regeneration, both physically and economically.

At this workshop we'll be sharing our experience on simple and cost effective techniques for increasing soil fertility within a permaculture framework. This will include:
  • Cover cropping
  • Cold and hot composting
  • Liquid fertilisers
  • Vermiculture, ie worm farming
  • Cultivating effective micro-organisms, lactic acid bacteria, bokashi and indigenous micro-organisms, and
  • Biochar
This is a hands on and participatory workshop which will leave you equipped with everything you need to improve soil fertility using any and all of the above techniques.

In the spirit of transparency, please see this link for a breakdown of our estimated costs. All materials are donated to Khanyisa and go toward improving the site.

If you feel inspired to sponsor a ticket for someone economically disempowered, consider puchasing a Pay it Forward ticket and we'll ensure it goes to someone deserving for a future workshop. Or if you feel inspired to pay more for your ticket, you're welcome to donate by selecting the Gift Us ticket option on top of your general ticket purchase. All donations are warmly appreciated and go toward improving the work we do.

We accept Bitcoin. Drop us a message to find out how you can pay using Bitcoin.

This workshop will only go ahead if there are 15 confirmed paying participants, so please share with those you feel may benefit. This is to ensure we cover our costs, keep the workshop fee low and make this education accessible. In the event we do not reach the 15 humans target, your ticket will be fully refunded. Tickets are non-refundable otherwise.

We have 1 free ticket up for grabs for those who spread the word the most. Like our page, comment, and share this event as much as possible to stand a chance of winning.

What to bring:
  • Snacks and a lunch to share. In the spirit of compassionate sharing, please ensure what you bring to share is kosher / halaal / vegetarian, and if you are unable to bring anything, don't fret as there should be plenty to go round.
  • Your own crockery (plates, cups and mugs) and cutlery
  • Water bottle
  • Sun hat and sun glasses
  • Notepad and pen if you want to take notes (participants receive a full set of notes via email post the event)
  • Comfortable clothes - this is an outdoor event and we'll be getting our hands dirty
  • Camping chairs / blankets / yoga mats / pillows to sit on
  • An open mind and your inner genius
Looking forward to connecting and co-creating a rich learning experience with you!

Stay awesome you crazy creatures.

BIOCHAR

Biochar is a potent soil amendment (especially for the Cape's sandy soils) that can be made simply from waste biomass and wood feedstocks.

EFFECTIVE MICRO-ORGANISMS

From boosting soil fertility to treating polluted water bodies to cleaning households, Effective Micro-organisms is a potent biotechnology with a long history of science behind it, and best of all which can be made simply and cheaply by anyone.
