THE ARTISTS AND THE ART WORKS
ADAM CARNEGIE #1
Adam Carnegie is a well-known fine art illustrator, designer and painter. He won a bronze Communication Media Award for illustration excellence. He is best known for his whimsical compositions. He is passionate about the environment and lives in the heart of a wetland nature reserve, Zeekoevlei. Adam is a storyteller. All his pictures are stories with playful love at their core. Cape Town and surrounds is a treasure trove of natural beauty – and finding the treasure in every moment inspires him. His images sometimes capture deep unspoken “issues” that underlie South Africa and its tensions and the crazy, subtle things that “get in the way” of us being united.
To see more of Adam’s work, visit www.behance.net/Adamada or email [email protected]

AIDAN BILLING #2
We love this year’s colourful Fair poster – designed especially for us by Aidan Billing. The artwork will be printed on to wood and block mounting.
Aidan is a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. After studying Graphic Design and Animation, he worked in the publishing and media industry, designing and art directing some of South Africa's top print publications.
You can view Aidan’s work on aidanbillingdesign.com.Contact Aidan on [email protected]?

CILLA WILLIAMS #3
An interest in ceramics in the early 1970s led Cilla to inspirational tuition at the Ruth Prowse Art Centre. Subsequently, Angelique Kirk, Maxi Heyman and the late Marikie van der Merwe were instrumental in developing her practice. She works in porcelain clay. The vessels are wheel thrown, glazed and high fired in an electric kiln. Cilla's work does not aspire to functionalism but rather to the making of pure form in a personal idiom. She has won numerous awards.

CLIP CLOP #4
Fiona Berrisford and Chris Berens are parents to three children at Michael Oak. Their company Clip Clop makes a range of calendars, maps and stationery inspired by the tagline, “loving the living world around us”. Their beautiful Africa Moon poster shows the phases of the moon and was first produced for the year 2000 (the year of the birth of Peter, now in Class 11!). Southern Tides, which plots the rise and fall of the tides against an hourly grid, followed the next year. Both these posters will hang on the Art Wall in their new poster hanger frames.

GABRIELLE RAAFF #5
Michael Oak parent Gabrielle Raaff's hauntingly beautiful paintings are inspired by her passage through life and her environment. Gabrielle's work has appeared in over 40 joint and solo exhibitions both locally and abroad, and she is represented in numerous major colletions. Her work may be viewed and purchased at Smith Gallery, Salon 91 or privately - by appointment. Currently her work can be viewed at Cavali Gallery from now until Dec 3rd.
This beautiful piece is entitled: 'Gardening In Eden 3'.

'I FELT LIKE IT' #6
Michael Oak parents, designer Cathy Coates and architect Martin Commerford, are the creative geniuses behind the hand-crafted felt lampshades that have made such a mark on the lighting landscape.
Their pure karakul wool lampshades integrate an ancient fabric-making technique with sophisticated minimalism, creating lighting that is soft and ambient.
‘I felt like it’ has been represented at several Cape Design Indabas and the Milan Furniture Fair. Their beautiful lampshades have been extensively showcased in local magazines, and grace numerous local and international restaurants, hotels, boutique guesthouses, health spas and game lodges, as well as the homes of discerning private clients.

KENDAL WARREN #7
She has exhibited extensively and her work is available in galleries around South Africa as well as being used in the refurbishment of the Hout Bay Manor, the One and Only Hotel and the Tuynhuys. She also has three pieces in the Iziko Museum’s permanent collection. All pieces are hand-built in either earthenware or stoneware. Inspiration is drawn from many sources, ranging from traditional African to contemporary design. She is drawn to pattern of all sorts and has a love for fabrics and textile designs. She is inspired by needlecrafts, such as appliqué, embroidery and quilting and this influences much of her work. Kendal works and teaches ceramics from her studio in Cape Town.
Kendal is mother to Sam (Grade 7) Mobile: 083 3096274 | Email: warren [email protected]

KIM SLATER #8
Kim’s love of art, design, photography and nature has inspired the development of this print which is a new addition to Kim’s “Cosmic Collection”, a collection of works focusing on re-creating nature into cosmic eco-systems. Regular walks through various areas of the Table Mountain Nature Reserve have provided Kim with the images she needs to develop her artistry in various mediums.

LIESEL TRAUTMAN #9
Trained originally as a textile designer and wildlife artist, Liesel has found her niche in ceramics, working primarily in porcelain. Drawing on traditional Chinese and Victorian sources, her elegant and feminine work is nevertheless undeniably modern. Her attention to detail is evident in her range of functional slipcast vessels.
You can view more of Liesel’s work on www.lieseltrautman.co.za. She will also be opening a new shop in Kenilworth Main Road soon.

MARIJKE HONIG #10
Fynbos by Marijke Honig (I think she is a parent in Kathy’s KG class). Marijke is a landscaper and expert on indigenous plants. She studied botany at the University of Cape Town, honed her craft at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and has for the past 15 years been designing and planting indigenous landscapes. Marijke is recognised for her ability to create indigenous landscapes with an underlying harmony, reflecting her in-depth plant knowledge and love for texture. Her book Plant Palettes has been published by Quivertree.

MELANIE MEYER #11
After running a successful architectural practice for many years, Melanie decided to focus full time on her passions of art and photography. She spends a lot of time in nature and is constantly inspired by the natural world around her – this is evident in her brilliant work. She is an internationally recognised artist and we are very privileged to have her etching hang on our Art Wall this year.

SEAN WILSON #14
Sean is a Cape Town based photographer whose work explores the intersection between the denotative and connotative aspects of the medium. He aspires towards creating images that point beyond themselves and reflect reality in a mysteriously deepened form. Sean’s commercial work predominantly involves photographing people for editorial, PR, corporate and educational publishing applications. His work is represented in the collections of British American Tobacco, The United States Embassy in Johannesburg and the United Kingdom Embassy in Cape Town.

VOGEL #15
Vogel is a family business run by Michael Oak parents, John & Terri Vogel. They specialise in the design & manufacture of exceptionally crafted timber furniture. John's designs are informed by the desire to create and promote a South African identity through three-dimensional objects. He draws inspiration from familiar natural shapes and forms, bringing them into the contemporary context.
The combination of machining and finishing by hand imparts a warm, tactile quality to the pieces.
The wall mount Nguni Head is one of Vogel’s smaller, statement pieces, referencing the wild Nguni cattle that wander our coastlines, creating a connection to our environment. It can be used to hang throws & coats.
