I wish Someone had told Me...the Adoption Journey holds more than I expected
Mon Feb 23, 19:30 - Mon Feb 23, 21:00
Event is online
ABOUT
Adoption brings deep love and commitment but it also brings layers that many parents are not fully prepared for.
At Arise, we walk alongside adoptive and foster parents at different stages of their journey. Again and again, we hear the same words:
“I wish someone had told me…”
- Told me how adoption uniquely shapes parenting.
- Told me how family changes such as divorce, death, or moving...can deeply affect my child.
- Told me that attachment challenges can surface unexpectedly, even when things seem to be going well.
- Told me that behaviour can change suddenly, leaving me feeling unsure or overwhelmed.
This online workshop helps parents make sense of these realities, understand their role in the adoption journey, and feel less alone when navigating complex moments.
What this workshop will explore
- How adoption, early loss, and trauma can influence behaviour and emotions
- Why family transitions can feel especially destabilising for adopted children
- Understanding behaviour as communication rather than defiance
- Creating space for reflection without blame or judgement
There will be dedicated time for questions and discussion in a safe, non-judgemental space, where parents can ask the hard questions they may not feel safe asking elsewhere.
Who should attend
Adoptive parents, foster parents, prospective adoptive parents, and caregivers supporting adopted or fostered children.
Facilitated by
The Arise Family team, a Cape Town-based non-profit organisation with over 15 years’ experience supporting vulnerable children and strengthening families through trauma-informed, attachment-focused practice.
