About us:
Folklore Festival Fringe 2026 represents a pivotal evolution for the Folklore Festival brand, transitioning from a successful, single-city event into a dynamic, six-city national tour. Building on the momentum of the festival's acclaimed 4th edition (in September 2025) and the successful pilot of its Industry Night showcase, this initiative is designed to connect, cultivate, and celebrate South Africa's contemporary folk arts ecosystem. The tour will travel to Durban, Gqeberha, Joburg, Cape Town, Pretoria, and Polokwane over six consecutive weeks, from March 6 to the second week of April 2026.
Under the continuing thematic banner of #Kinfolk, the Fringe Festival will explore the diverse expressions of community, heritage, and identity across the nation. Each city will host a full-day event comprising of two distinct but interconnected components. The first is an Industry Day featuring four expert-led panel discussions designed to foster critical dialogue on the creative economy. The second is a curated Industry Night Showcase, providing a high-visibility platform for four exceptional regional artists working in indigenous and contemporary folk music, film, poetry, and dance.
Together, these two halves create a powerful synergy: providing the intellectual framework to understand the industry by day, and the creative spark to inspire it by night.
About Folklore Festival: The Folklore Festival is South Africa's premier celebration of African cultural heritage, storytelling traditions, and indigenous knowledge systems. Through music, literature, theatre, spoken word, poetry, film, and visual arts, the festival creates vital platforms for cultural preservation while nurturing emerging talent and fostering intergenerational dialogue.
