ABOUT
Percussionist, scholar, composer and activist Tumi Mogorosi is in the vanguard of the South African creative music and cultural scene’s burgeoning outer-national dimension. He took the drummer’s chair in multiple boundary-pushing formations, including Shabaka and The Ancestors and the avant-garde noiseniks The Wretched. His latest project Group Theory Black Music was a musical ode to the great spirit of what was known as Great Black Music which had not only an artistic but also a political significance. We can say Mogorosi stranddles between Black performativity and Black Studies/theory, Mogorosi is a lecturer in at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) and also at Tshwane University of Technology.
His latest European tour started at Le Guess Who? 2025 where he leads his own powerful quintet promoting his upcoming album "Thank you for your Service"- due for release 2026 April featuring London based musicians. Driven by activist urgency and a large-scale creative vision, Mogorosi explores musical motives and improvisation to create modal grooves rooted in political jazz and creative music, working toward a sound that celebrates collective expression.
