The Library of Things We Forgot to Remember

ABOUT

Event Summary

“7 / 8” marks the launch of an annual collaborative project between two artists born a day apart. This first edition celebrates Mr MediaX’s return to Johannesburg after five years away from exhibiting, alongside Thobani K’s debut introduction to the Joburg art scene. Together, they present a dialogue-driven exploration of their evolving practices, rooted in themes of collaboration, memory, water apartheid, music, and cultural reclamation.

Artists

  • Mr MediaX: A South African multimedia artist and Creative Director whose work blends fine art, performance, and digital media with emerging technologies like VR and AR. His practice interrogates rural cultural displacement, the gaze, and African identity in the digital age.
  • Thobani K: A Durban-born image maker whose art critically engages with sociopolitical issues of water and displacement, drawing from his family’s history of land dispossession and resonating deeply with African consciousness.

Venue

Hosted at The Library of Things We Forgot to Remember, an archive of African vinyls, posters, and cultural memory, the event connects contemporary artistic investigations with the visual and sonic histories preserved in the archive. The collaborative nature of the library offers a unique space for dialogue, memory, and cultural continuity.

Format

  • Film Screening: 12-minute short film
  • Vinyl Listening Session: 45 minutes of curated selections
  • Main Event: Artist presentations with projected artworks and audience Q&A (60–90 minutes)
