Kloofendal Nature Reserve and Mine Workings

Sun Feb 22, 09:00 - Sun Feb 22, 11:30

Kloofendal Nature Reserve Centre

ABOUT

Situated within the Kloofendal Nature Reserve are the remains of some of the first mine workings on the Witwatersrand. The first payable gold on the Rand was extracted by brothers Fred and Henry Struben on this site in 1884. Although the Confidence Reef mine produced little gold, this initial discovery helped to spark a gold rush to the area and the subsequent discovery of gold in the Main Reef in 1886.

Join our guides Ed Coogan and David Lea and local expert, Rod Kruger, who will guide us to the mine. The path through the Reserve to the mine workings is around 1.5 kilometres. It is a little uneven in places, and very exposed. Remember your hat, hiking boots and sunscreen, and please bring your own water.

Your ticket includes entrance to the reserve and refreshments.

The tour will last approximately 2½ hours but there is the option for those who wish to stay on for a PowerPoint presentation by Rod on the history of the Strubens and early gold exploration.

Guests are welcome to bring along a picnic or do their own walk afterwards.
